Actually I'm not sure this is true. I remember inquiring about this a long time ago and receiving a response from Chris Cox that Adobe had given up on the gamut tag as they are notoriously unreliable.
My own calculations confirm this without any doubt. The gamut tags tend to contain information that ranges from 'fairly inaccurate' to 'totally out to lunch'...
So they (and we) have been relying on our own calculations since then.
