Helene,
I hope you have some time to spend on this purchasing decision because the
best thing you can do is to go out and see for yourself all the LCD monitors
you can sample. Eizo's and NEC's are both very good offerings, no doubt. But
I'd suggest that, at some point, you'd take a look at Apple's LCDs, the 23"
Cinema Display, in particular, as that will provide a good, sort of
"independent" reference point into what you can realistically expect from
current LCD technology, in the price point you're looking for.
Deep shadows isn't as easy to come by as good highlight details. I'd suggest
you go to your nearest Apple Store and bring a series of your favorite RGB
images on a CD. Load them up and decide if you like what you see. If you can
find as good a quality for less money, you might want to consider that (Dell
WFP24", come to mind). If that's not good enough for you then you're going
to back looking at NEC and Eizo's. Samsung XL series is the new kind on the
block, in my opinion, in high-end graphic displays. But you might find their
current price tag still too steep for your budget. They do good shadows but
you get what you pay for. Have you looked at the LaCIE LCDs? The 326?
