Matt,
As far as I know, PrintOpen from HDM is the only ICC profiler that offers an
explicit and user-controllable smoothing function. And, yes, I use it all
the time on press data. I shied away a long time before using it in my work
but in the context of publically available data, such as fogra39L and
SWOP2006_Cx, I realized that it's best to do. Smoothing does make for smooth
gradations and evens outs every little wrinkle in a press printing unit
(there can be many). Personally, I always smooth on top of averaging.
