Marco, if the front end at this shop is as dumb as the one that got the
last job I sent to a Vutek shop, all bets are off. I had to ask for it
to be done several times before it was anywhere near acceptable and it
only flew then because time was out. I've used several Vutek shops and
this appears to be the routine.
My best suggestion is to send them a file converted to SWOP coated v2
(only because it's more of a standard, so probably what they expect)
along with a proof of what it should look like and ask them to adjust
the controls till it reasonably matches and that's about all you can
expect from them. You're playing in a market that lives on paper thin
margins and you'd think they would've figured out that color management
would help them in their endeavors, but they all appear to take a brute
force approach instead by hiring cheap labor instead of calibrating
their equipment and then hoping that the customer will appreciate the
low price and not complain about bad quality.
As you know, equipment vendors like to sell these machines like turnkey
appliances so the owners never plan on an investment in color managment
workflows.
best~

If there is some intelligent kind of ICC-compliant conversion taking
place
when the file is sent to the Vutek device (meaning a conversion that
honors
the source file's embedded profile and produces a proper transform
into the
target device space), then fine: the results would be good in that
case,
provided that the source file is properly tagged and the embedded
profile is
honored in the conversion.
But if the device is "dumb" (not ICC-aware and it strips the embedded
profile), and in the absence of clear directions from the vendor
regarding
which CMYK color space is best for the data in the source file, it all
turns
into a complete and dangerous gamble.
