Hi Anthony,
As a lowly photographer , the standard reply from far too many press
and prepress houses when asked for CMYK spec is :
"300dpi jpeg CMYK."
It generally takes several 'phone calls to either get some vague
specification or agree on a colourspace that will give us some form
of disclaimer. In critical situations ( 99.9% of most jobs ! ) If we
have the time and the co-operation, we'll send them a target and ask
them to either proof it or wetproof it ( preferably both ) and build
a profile to suit.
If I were supplying imagery to a company whose website states :
Prepress is performed by dedicated, professional graphic artists and
color management specialists.
I would 'phone and ask to speak to one of their 'color management
experts'. The direct approach is often the best. It also helps of
course if the commissioning client is in the loop and onside, this
has a way of helping to focus attention :-) .
In circumstances where there is still confusion , we'll gently point
the suppliers in the direction of one or all of the several best
practice guidelines for the supply of images that have been compiled
by committees representing all sectors of the industry and that are
freely available on the web.
On possibly a more salient point , if we're supplying images for
inkjet banners as opposed to billboards , we'll supply at a minimum
of 150 ppi at the final repro size . (With an Epson device , it used
to be the perceived wisdom that supplying in 180 , 360 or 720ppi
would provide the best results). From bitter experience , we've
found that many 'graphic artists' only look at the physical size of
the image at not the resolution . I can't quite see the reason for
scaling the image in any way unless the file size limitations of
Photoshop kick in.
Then of course there is the issue of sharpening ....is the file to
be supplied sharpened , are there experts applying USM , or is it
part of an automated process? Maybe a question for one of their
"professional graphic artists " <BG>.
Regards,
Bob Marchant.
