I was talking to the owner of the company, who may nat have a clue as to
what his machines do, or how they do it, or how his people make the
machines do what they do. Trying to put a positive face on it, I can
try to imagine that the Vutek IS color managed, and the flavor of CMYK
hasn't mattered because the RIP is doing a great job handling whatever
is thrown at it.
Questions arise when he says things like "The color gets messed up" if
they receive RGB files. But here's the site's spiel on their expertise...
"Prepress is performed by dedicated, professional graphic artists and
color management specialists. The pre-press department checks to make
sure the file is suitable for printing. They make sure the colors in
the file are set to maximize vividness and crispness. With knowledge
of the complex intricacies and behaviors of the printer, the pre-press
department carefully scrutinizes every aspect of each individual file.
Proofing is performed by printing machine specialists in conjunction
with the pre-press department to ensure proper color and print quality.
Both parties pool their knowledge together and agree upon the best
possible way to print. Inspecting is also done by the printing machine
specialists and pre-press specialists to ensure the final print matches
the file. Paying attention to detail is very important. This is an
intense process which has many specific guidelines. The printing
process is constantly supervised by experienced, dedicated grand format
digital printing specialists. There is no margin for error. Tolerances
and the performance of the printing machine are closely monitored at all
times to ensure proper output. Careful attention is paid to each
mechanical aspect of the printer. The vinyl and inks are constantly
monitored for quality purposes. The printer operates under many watchful
eyes."
At least they have a good copywriter. I didn't choose and can't change
the printer now, so here are some fairly "standard" profiles in my
system to choose from...
