Strange that they would ask for CMYK but then not give you a clue as
to what profile should be used.
Vutek's traditionally came with a bundled version of the ColorBurst
RIP (nothing like their newer X-Photo/Proof product, more like their
"leagcy" Pro/Prepress/ProLab versions). If so, and they've kept it up-
to-date, then it should have color management capabilities. Assuming
they're using ColorBurst's in-RIP color management (ICC) conversion,
just ask them to tell you what default INPUT (not Output) profiles
they are using. It PROBABLY is a SWOP-like profile for CMYK. If you
don't have the profile they named, then simply have them send it to
you. ColorBurst has always had versions of standard profiles but with
their name attached like "CSE_SWOP" or "CSE_GRACOL" or similar.
If they are NOT color managing in the RIP but instead have the Vutek
profiled and are doing the conversions in Photoshop (or external from
the RIP), have them send you the Vutek profile for you to convert to.
If they are not doing ANY color management whatsoever but simply
sending CMYK direct to the printer via ColorBurst then all bets are
off! :-)
As far as the resolution goes, I would say that 75-150ppi @ final size
for an 8'x10' banner would be more than adequate or between
900-1800ppi at their 1/12th size requirement. FYI, most poster
printing I've seen done is with the original at around 90ppi (Epson
rez factor, 720dpi/8) or 75ppi (600dpi/8) and looks fine at about
2'x3' or larger as long as the PRINTING dpi is kept high enough for
good screening quality.

I need to prepare a file for a customer that is going to be sent to a
company called Magic Vinyl Printing, to be made into an eight foot

foot wide trade show banner, printed on a Vutek 5300. I've never seen
one. Here are the file requirements from their website....

File Dimensions: 1/12th of Print Size (1 Inch Equals 1 Foot)
File Resolution: 600 DPI (at 1/12th Scale)
Color Mode: CMYK
File Format: JPG (Max Quality) or PDF with (JPG Compression, Fonts
Outlined)
If using Adobe Photoshop, saving in JPG Format at Maximum Quality is
strongly recommended. Do not send a .PSD (Photoshop) file. If using
Adobe Illustrator or other similar vector design software, outline all
fonts, make sure images are embedded not linked, and save the file
as a
PDF using JPG Compression at Maximum Quality.

IOW... The file for this 8' x 10' banner, must be 8" x 10" at 600ppi.
According to the owner, the Vutek prints at 300dpi, or, by my
calculation, 50ppi of the actual file resolution. This may work for
billboards viewed fro a hundred feet away, but a trade show banner is
usually seen from about six to ten feet. When I asked him how the
banner would look, he said, "Sharp as a magazine ad". Well.... OK.
But when asked him what flavor of CMYK he wanted, he was stumped. In
his mind, CMYK is CMYK is CMYK. No one had ever asked that question
before. He just wants the file in CMYK. He said that when people
have
sent RGB files, the color gets all messed up.
QUESTION: Is anyone familiar with the Vutek, and could recommend a
CMYK
colorspace to separate to?
