That just seems huge to me. Any opinion ?

First of all: Based on my experience I'm afraid to say that a Delta E about 2 between different instruments is not unusual. But there might be chances to improve the situation:

- There were two firmware updates for the DTP20 in 2005 which /might/ improve things (the release notes for the first update list several "Scan Measurement Enhancements". See
<http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=675&Action=Support>

- There are also some cleaning instructions (optics and calibration reference) for the Instruments on the support pages.

- This is the support page for the DTP41:
<http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=274&Action=Support>

<http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=274&Action=Support&SupportID=3422>:
"X-Rite generally suggests an annual re-certification for its spectrally based measurement devices. This annual visit to our certified color lab ensures that your investment is in good working order and satisfies ISO requirements. Service contracts are available for most of our current instrument offerings."
