Ken,
Your chances would improve if you would indicate what operating
system you have, whether you have a compiled version of dcraw or just
the source code ? I am sure if it were another piece of software you
would give this information when requesting help ?
Let me rephrase the question: "I have a camera and would like to
insert a roll of Kodachrome". How do I do this ? Surely, you would
expect to say what camera you need help with ?
Ok Edmund, let's assume for a moment Ken, an Apple colorsync-users
subscriber, uses a Mac and was clever enough to download
<http://www.insflug.org/raw/file_download/4/dcraw-MacOSX.tgz>.
Let's also asume he used Safari with the default setting "Open 'save'
files after downloading". In this case, he likely has a file named
"dcraw-MacOSX.tar" in his download folder.
Double-clicking it does not really bring him closer: there is a new
folder "usr" now in his download folder with two sub-folders "bin" and
"share" and several files in it.
Not later than now it's necessary to launch terminal.app.
One Idea would be to type something like "man tar" or even "man man" --
another idea would be to go straight to the bin folder and launch the
executable (Macintosh users don't need manuals! -- and even "man dcraw"
can wait).
So, Ken:
when you type
"cd ~/Downloads/usr/bin" now, press the return key, type "./dcrawU" and
press return again you will launch dcraw (at least for some miliseconds).
And now?
well ... there was a manual somewhere ... ;-)
Klaus
