Others may disagree with my view about drum scanners and ICC rendering
intents, but I'd submit that the direct connection space that seems to be
taking place, you refered to, without the need to specify for rendering
intent strikes me as an oversimplification. In my view, drum scanners
controls offered the operator unlimited rendering intents because of the
myriads of ways that hue, lightness and chroma could be rendered from the
original.
