IMHO the short answer would be 'yes'. The impetus for the creation of the
ICC back in the mid-90's was to enable the free and easy exchange of images
and color and have consistent results across platforms. This was not
possible given the closed proprietary systems that were being sold at the
time. (Paul's list is fairly complete for high-end systems.) In these
systems, the embedded transforms knew the input, output and display devices
and were built optimized for them. This is entirely analagous to Device
Links which also transform from device to device and in which src & dst
systems are known at creation time. So I would say Paul's assertion is
valid.
(BTW - there are other ways of building a DVL which does not rely on
concatenating a src & dst profile; i.e. from scratch using char data. In
any event, how a DVL is built really isn't germane to the issue being
discussed here.).
