Yes, they are *supposed* to do that, but it depends on the prepress house.
Sometimes they mess it up, and in that case the "chain of command" is no
longer so clear-cut. It may even be better to do the separation *ourselves*,
if we have the know-how in color-managed workflows and have learned enough
about the final printing conditions to make an educated guess that would
provide better results than those that would come from the prepress house,
based on past history.
Again, it's not always as simple as it *should* be in the best of all
worlds.
