My basic question is it is ok / advisable / wise to profile thru a Plug in? It allows to select no colour management to print the targets.

I have found the plug-in with the 16 bit option enabled to be the best way of profiling the iPF printers. You'll get slightly better results if you use a true 16 bit profiling target (like Bill Atkinson's) and you'll be able to use the profiles interchangeably between the driver and plug-in. I personally prefer a 1728 target and Monaco Profiler over the other profiling options.
