No it's not an extreme dumb down, although the Apple panels are really dumb.
There are very few LCD panels with hardware white point adjustment
AFAIK. I don't think even the Eizo's can do this. I think the old SGI
1600SW could, but that's history.
LCD whitepoint is usually set by adjusting the profile. And most
software can do this - if it suggests 5000 or 6500 K it is setting the
white point by profile, that's what it's already doing. I you get one
of high end LED backlight panels which maybe can do hardware
whitepoint adjust, or accept the limitations of the generally used LCD
technology.

If it helps to say so, CRTs were real additive color, adding the
phosphor primaries, but LCDs are de-facto substractive, they filter
the color of a backlight. This is why whitepoint adjustment doesn't
make sense if the backlight is a single tube, may make sense if the
backlight is multiple or consists of LEDs.
