I have nothing but good good stories to tell from my designer and ad
agency clients that use them. As someone who has worked with print
professionals on all brands of color laser printers on a color
management level for over 15 years I feel strongly that Xerox is the
only brand to consider if you are picky about quality. Their whole line
of machines from the iGen to the 7760 are great.
The Docucolor 240/250/260 series represents Xerox's latest generation
technology. It's a modular system with a variety of options (3 RIPS (the
most affordable "bustled" RIP is dang good), binder, stapler, etc). If
you are used to the 7750 you will be very impressed with the quality of
the new toner and engine that these machines use. They usually come with
an EyeOne for profiling and/or daily linearization.
We had a Docucolor 12 (no longer available) with Spash and were
comfortable with it. Then we bought a DC240 with the Creo RIP and were
gutted. The colormanagement and PS/PDF interpretation of the Creo RIP
was simply unusable for our tasks. We had long discussions with Xerox
and the Creo developers and decided to swap the Creo RIP for Splash in
the end.
Also the Splash version for the DC240 was very buggy in the beginning,
but it became more usable in the meantime.
We also had to return our first DC240 for a new one after countless
unsuccessful attempts to fix it. The new DC240 is still a good deal
worse than the DC12. It is much more instable, more prone to break down
and there are /always/ strong color variations across the sheet.
You'll want the Phaser 7760. It is extremely stable. The most
stability I have ever seen in a laser printer
I agree - the 7760 has been a fantastic performer for lots of my
demanding clients for years now. It is slated for a update to use
Xerox's latest toner technology (as found in the 240/250/260) but it's
not a photocopier as Roger requested.
I am not satisfied with the DC240 toner because of its bad color
constancy. When you sway a print near the window to examine it in
daylight and artificial light alternating, you sometimes believe to see
two entirely different pages.
Just my two cents.
