How have you resolved your issues with the Ultrachrome inks and the
Pro 9600?
Yes, I think that we have finally -- and it looks as if it was a
hardware problem with the cyan head rather than an ink chemistry
problem.
We've yet to get any feedback from Epson over the test samples that we
sent them but got so desperate to get FOGRA proofs out earlier this
week that we pushed the 9600 to one side and replaced it with another
9600 that we normally only used for Matte K work.
To re-cap, the old machine showed absolutely no sign of head problems
-- no blocked jets, perfect looking test prints but uncontrollably odd
Cyan results.
After emptying the other 9600 of matte black I loaded it with the same
cyan cartridge from the suspect one and gave it a load of deep clean
and proof cycles and measured all the ECI Visual targets and FOGRA
wedges that came out. Nothing was out by much from expected
considering we were using two different printers.
And the Cyan readings stayed consistently good too even after enough
deep cleans to have replaced the older cyan with the newer stuff that
I thought was bad. Later, two iterations of ECI Visuals and Lab curve
corrections were all we needed to get back down to less than 2 dE for
all readings of the FOGRA wedge.
So, I still don't understand the exact nature of the problem.
Something is wrong with the cyan head but it looks as if it working
perfectly. Even under a powerful magnifier the ink nozel test page
looks perfect.
Perhaps we could have spotted this sooner if there were some proper
test pages built in to the 9600 firmware? As it stands it seems
impossible to do the simplest thing with this device -- namely output
a page with solid patches from each of the ink heads :-(
Anybody want a 9600?
