David,

I thought I had read somewhere that Epson partly controlled bronzing by altering the order in which the inks were deposited on the paper. Did I imagine this, or could this be the reason why the Epson driver and RIP behaved differently?

Actually gloss differential happens at the light end, in the difference
between areas with ink, and without. Bronzing happens at the dark end, in deep
shadow areas. You can eliminate gloss differential with Gloss Optimizer, or a
spray coating, but there's no guarantee that a spray will eliminate bronzing (and
Gloss Optimizer doesn't get used in the dark areas). A different media may be
better, by allowing a higher ink limit with less surface buildup; or a
different media setting with the same paper might even be an improvement, by reducing
the ink loading.
