In a similar vein, I completely agree with your statement with one
exception. :) I have no reason to doubt the technical veracity of your
statement - indeed it makes intuitive sense to me.
However, in line with my original colorSync message, let me offer the
following word-smithing changes to your statement:
"non-GCR images" --> Light K (separated) images
"GCR images" --> Heavy K (separated) images
Granted that my suggested terms don't roll off the tongue as easily as the
earlier wording, but they're more readily understood and don't convey any
misapprehensions.
In my view GCR should be mainly used to concisely refer to a law of Physics
- that K & mixtures of CMY are equivalent. From this phenomenological
perspective the notion of GCR comes into play at each and every grid point
when building a Profile, be it for a "Heavy" or "Light" K separation. Most
colors (but not all) have a max/min K ink solution for which there exists
some mixture CMY which yields that colorimetric Lab. The essence of a K
generation strategy is, for each and every grid point, to pick the K within
that max/min range that imparts all the positive traits you want in a
profile (yes - there are good ways of making this choice and bad ways).
