Hi Mike,
Don’t be to general when saying that " current profile generation
tools are a bit lacking for this niche".
You can comment this about popular profiling app if you want, but
there are other profiling app (PerfX for example) which performs very
well in this niche.

Your not crazy (unless its catching). For quadtones, we still go
the route of adjusting "duotone" options using Photoshop,
converting RGB to grayscale, then to quadtone. I've gotten a
somewhat reasonably close ICC profile by adjusting settings with
Monaco Profiler as you've outlined, but haven't found it totally
satisfactory....CMY still introduced inconsistently. So yes, I
agree that current profile generation tools are a bit lacking for
this niche.
