Your not crazy (unless its catching). For quadtones, we still go the route of adjusting "duotone" options using Photoshop, converting RGB to grayscale, then to quadtone. I've gotten a somewhat reasonably close ICC profile by adjusting settings with Monaco Profiler as you've outlined, but haven't found it totally satisfactory....CMY still introduced inconsistently. So yes, I agree that current profile generation tools are a bit lacking for this niche.
