Dear Steve,

This is an old, old story. IT departments go to company executives and say that costs would be lower if whole company used one type of computer and one OS. Usually these IT people have invested their whole life learning Windows. They usually know very little about Macs. They point out without any studies that Macs cost more. Given this background let me tell you a story...

Once upon a time in a company far, far, away...

I sent a note to the CFO complaining that the IT department did not know how to support the Macs in the company. I further complained that people were coming to me for Mac support and this was not what I was supposed to be doing. I suggested that the IT department hire a Mac expert to give Mac support.

The CFO sent this message to the head of the IT department and asked what was going on.

The head of the IT department sent back a note that pointed out that only 2% of the requests for support were from Mac users.

The CFO then sent back a message asking how many Macs were in the company.

The head of the IT department said the we had about 350 Macs out of about 1,000 computers.

The CFO then suggested that if the 350 Macs only required 2% of the support, we should get everyone Macs and fire most of the IT department.

The IT department hired one Mac expert. There were about 12 people in the IT department.

Does anyone know of any studies conducted regarding prepress/color
management on Mac vs. PC? With data to back it up.

Our IT dept. is requesting we switch to all PC computer workstations for all
prepress (80 computers). My intention is not to start a PC vs. Mac war. I
would like to know what are the pro's and cons of using a PC for color
management and prepress.

I've been using Macs since 1988 and have a biased opinion. If someone could
point me in the direction of where I can find unbiased information on this
subject, it would be greatly appreciated.

I need to know what would happen to our color management if they came in and
pulled our Macs and replaced them with PCs.

Thanks,
Steve Miller
