It seems to me, Edmund, you pulled this Pro 9600 out of the trash, not
knowing how to use it. Nothing wrong with doing this. I would have
tried with great ernest to find operating instructions on the web.
I have had my Pro 9600 for some years now, since I was using Mac OS
9. Some big problems did occur for me with transition to OS X. I
have learned to overcome the shortcomings of presets not sticking. I
had no other choice. I started with Firewire connections.
When I tried Gimp-Print, now Gutenprint, USB was the only connection
supported, that I was aware of. I now just stick with USB
I do not remember any half prints using the Epson driver. However I
have numerous problems getting the complete print with Gutenprint, as
Robert Krawitz is aware of. He and his colleagues have been helping
me with these problems.. However, yesterday, using the Epson R320,
which is not a pro printer, only partial prints came out with
Gutenprint. Using the Epson driver, I had the complete print come out.
Being mentally hardware/software compromised, I have no idea why this
happens. I do know I can depend on the OS 10.4.11 driver to create
my salable canvas prints! I have not tried OS 10.5.3 directly
connected to the Pro 9600. My G4 dual 533 with OS 10.4.11 is my
currant print server. I send files to it from my G5 Dual 2.3 running
10.4.11, as well as from my MBP with 10.5.3.

A facile remark, but not quite appropriate.
I have a 2400, and can't say that usability is any better - settings
are equally convoluted and buggy, ***colorsync interaction equally
buggy***.
Oh, and yes, it doesn't do PK/MK switching without a reinstall of the
drivers.
Robert has emailed me, he thinks that the stability issues
-half-finished prints- have also been reported with Gutenprint on
Leopard with the 9600, indicating that the base OS may be at fault
here.
I think it's time the inkjet driver model got cleaned up a bit -
everyone has an inkjet these days. And the whole profile business is
not going to go very far if users cannot figure out how to get the
same amount of ink on paper when using sheet or roll feed, or from two
different OS versions.

Which they have done.
What they have not done is updated drivers on printers 2 generations
old
which I suppose you might argue they should.
