I assume that working sRGB (or converting from AdobeRGB or a wider space) as
a target space is optimal for the web, and that, even though monitors are
not routinely calibrated and profiled by users downstream, preparing and
evaluating imagery on calibrated and profiled monitors still makes sense.
True? It seems to me that you must standardize your creation process to be
sure that your imagery is consistent among themselves, and that if anyone
were color managed downstream, they would get the desirable result.
I assume many of the best practices in place for pre-press hold true as
well, including low ambient lighting, 5000k if possible, neutral gray
background and a good lightbox for color correction.
Also, I assume that calibrating to a spec similar to sRGB, like a 2.2 Gamma
and D65 white point might also be wise, along with a luminance value range
that is reasonably achievable by most monitors, say .5 black to 120 cm2
white. Is that true?
I really need to hear my fellow color geeks' opinions on this. I have
clients who feel that evaluating color on their uncalibrated and unprofiled
monitors make sense because "that's what the customer will see" and want to
be sure I answer their concerns wisely.
Thanks!
Jeff
