Hello to all,
It's been about a year since I last posted, but I still feel as if
I'm repeating myself like a broken broken record.
In the past, I've asked for advice about how to address the color
quality frustrations originating from our Phaser 7700DN. On my last e-
mail, our department was actually considering replacing it, and this
list responded with some good and helpful suggestions.
At that time several list members gave good marks to the Phaser 7760,
a used Workecentre M24, or a new Workecentre 7228 ( which I believe
was only available in Europe, unfortunately ). So I took those
recommendations to my directors, but unfortunately nothing happened.
That reaction from the brass was partly due to budget roadblocks and
partly to a deep distrust for anything with the words "Xerox" or
"Phaser" attached to its name. To be frank, the 7700 has seemed to be
a maintenance headache. And that's why I'm here again — our beloved
7700 has had a major component failure ( a $1200 part ). So now the
department is backed into proverbial corner and has to decide if we
should continue pouring money into our existing laser printer, or if
that money is better spent by applying it towards a new device that
offers better performance and control.
So once again I need to ask if there are any color laser printers
that seem to stand out of the pack in terms of color quality,
consistency, stability, etc. Being color manageable is an equally
important factor.
I've been advising the brass over and over that new doesn't
necessarily mean better if we don't choose wisely. Additionally, my
requests to implement color management to our workflow have been
largely ignored, in the past. Yet in the end, I would hate to see the
department invest money in a printer, just to have the designers
eventually complaining about the quality and continuing to send color
output to outside vendors — which is absurd if it's technically
possible to have pleasing color produced in the office.
Are the recommendations for the 7760 or an M24 still valid? I've
been told several times that the Xerox really has the color quality
and consistency down pretty well. But are there any other
manufacturers that have anything worth considering. I ask that
because one of the directors just brought me a catalog of HP
products. LIke I said, there seems to be a strong distrust here for
anything Xerox.
And yes, I will still argue that case that whatever printer we
purchase will still need color management.
Thanks for your patience. Any advice will be appreciated.
-Dean
