Dear ColorSyncers (specifically Dean Mackey),
I presume that the component failure you are referring to is the
laser unit?
I have a 7700DN in my home office/studio, and I had the same failure
last month.
It cost $1200 for the part, and it took me nearly 10 hours to install
it and to make the new laser unit work correctly.
I'm not trained by the factory; I just read the service manual and
did it myself.
Now that all that is done, the printer works really nicely again.
It's great, in fact.
I have successfully profiled the printer a few times, and I have a
few working profiles that I like. I find that once it's stable, and
if you keep using the same paper (I use the nice white from Staples),
you can be pretty confident in its output.
I also use a Xerox 3535 at school, connected to a Splash (Macintosh)
RIP. That's a nicer version of the very same printer. The print
speeds are better, color quality seems nicer, and I like the
consistency. I have never tried to run that printer other than
through the Splash RIP, so I don't know how it behaves on its own (I
don't even know if it has a PostScript RIP on board). On that printer
we use the Xerox brand Color Expressions white paper. It's much more
expensive, but it prints better, and the color is very nice.
The Xerox version is a lot more expensive (it has a scanner and a
collator, too), and the Splash RIP makes it pretty costly, but it's a
nice printer.
Like you, I keep looking for a nice color laser printer that is
appropriate to a graphic design workgroup, and I have not found one
yet that is better than the 7700 in its price range. At school we
also have a Xerox 2060 DocuColor, and it's much better, but it's also
over $200,000 with the RIP.
If you need advice on replacing your laser unit, let me know. I can
talk you down off of that ledge!
Best wishes,
Brian P. Lawler
