Hello,

I have a Nikon 9000 film scanner which offers a few different output color
spaces in the set-up menu. sRGB, Bruce, Adobe 1998, Wide Gamut, and Wide
Gamut (converted). I'm using the Holmes Ektaspace workspace in Photoshop
and am tying to decide which of these scanner color spaces will produce the
best results in Photoshop.

It seems to me that scanning in to the Wide Gamut or the Wide Gamut
(converted) would be better than using any of the other spaces because I'll
be converting my scans into the Holmes Ektaspace when I open them in
Photoshop. Converting from a large gamut (Nikon Wide Gamut) to a smaller
one (Holmes Ektaspace) seems a better choice than converting from the
smaller gamut Adobe 1998 to the larger gamut Ektaspace. Am I thinking
about this in the right way or did I miss something.

Grant,

If you are concerned with archiving all of the possible colors in a transparency you can save out the file in any space large enough for this purpose, and save out in 48-bit color. Choose one wide archiving space and be done with it--no additional intermediate conversions. Otherwise, export directly into your preferred working space, which must be wide enough not to clip any colors you intend to print. Keep in mind that really wide color spaces are hard to edit delicately in and imply 48-bit color to avoid banding and other difficulties. I've found that Ektaspace is a pretty good compromise--large enough to include nearly any colors in a transparency and thus good for archiving but not bad for editing, either (but again, better to stick with high-bit files). Does the Nikon software allow you to export directly into any space you like?

Best regards,

Mike
