Thanks to everyone who responded! The NEC is specified as 102%

that to something I'm more familiar with, such as sRGB or AdobeRGB or
another space like that?
Well if you want all the details (and to illustrate how easily the
numbers can be twisted by marketing folks since there isn't currently
an industry standard):
In CIE xy:
AdobeRGB size=106.6% coverage=97.5%
sRGB size=143.9% coverage=100%
NTSC (1953) size=101.9% coverage 92.3%
In CIE 'u'v
AdobeRGB size=119.2% coverage=99.3%
sRGB size=139.1% coverage=100%
NTSC (1953) size=121.3% coverage 93.9%
I wasn't planning to use it to watch movies
(though it sounds like it could be good for that).
No. Not a good thing - not without a color managed video player anyway.
Broadcast TV in the US uses SMPTE-C primaries which are closer to
sRGB (or the same as in case of HDTV) than the original NTSC spec.
The NTSC primaries were abandoned in the '60-'70s in favor of
achievable primaries. What you would end up with is horribly over
saturated video.
There is no info (as far as I can see) re. the backlight type in the
NEC announcement, but I trust Roger Breton's statement that it is
CCFL (inferred from the announced description perhaps?)
Roger is correct - It's CCFL.
Nevertheless,
I am surprised by this, since I thought LED technology was gaining
momentum following Apple's new MacBook displays.
The MacBooks use white LEDs which are a *totally* different beast
than RGB LEDs. Making a professional color reference 30" display with
RGB LEDs, that can maintain short and long term uniformity and color
stability, is very expensive using today's technology, especially
compared to the rapid advancements in wide gamut CCFL panels.
