I spent quite a bit of time looking at monitors recently. Had to replace two
fading Sony CRTs.

Went to an Apple store and calibrated their 30". Looked pretty good. Then
went to a dealer and tried a calibrated LaCie 27". Much less sharp (coarse
dot pitch).

Then read a review of the Dell 30" that claimed it was newer than the Apple
and a little better (slightly more contrast). Dell offers a 21 day no
questions asked guarantee which I consider essential for buying a monitor.

I can't compare it to the NEC, but I am absolutely delighted with it. A much
better stand (finger tip vertical, swing and tilt adjustments; Apple just
has tilts); stunningly good color with supplied profile (but still needs
calibration for matching a print).

This monitor essentially turned me onto photography again. Fine dot pitch
makes it really sharp. Very even. Excellent viewing angles. More gamut than
I can print on my 9800 with Atkinson profiles. Very bright even when
calibrated to 4700 (sic) for my Solex lights. Super good match to the prints
when calibrated. About $500 less than Apple and a 3 year guarantee. A happy
camper here.
