I agree we're really talking about different sorts of customers here.
Terry and I deal a lot with the proofing market, and for these
customers it's crucial that they match a very specific reference
color set every day on every print. We (and I think I speak for both
of us) consider proof verification software an essential component
and have little trouble convincing these folks they need to spend
fairly serious money on it. But I can't imagine most photographers
spending this sort of loot (e.g., $2500 for GMG, $2400 for ORIS, $950
for EFI) for verification and trending software. There are now some
less pricey products but all require a spectro.
Like Andrew, I'm not sure we really have a problem here, however.
Fine art printing requires consistency, to be sure, but users can
generally get pretty darn good consistency over quite a lot of prints
by sticking to the same materials, driver settings, and profiles and
keeping their printer nozzles clean. If this isn't good enough the
user is generally picky enough to invest a bit more money so he make
new profiles from time to time, or even invest in verification
software. I sense that some here are hoping for some magic solution
that eliminates all extra cost and human intervention, including
actually looking at prints to judge their quality and consistency.
Strange.

I'm not sure what you mean Edmund but there are several "proof
verification" packages on the market including GMG ProofControl (this
software is not limited to use with a GMG system in any way) and
ColorBurst comes bundled with SpectralVision which has a proof
verification module. There's also ColorMetrix and Monaco QCcolor. GMG
is also working on a version of ProofControl that utilizes the on-
board spectro of the HP "Z" series printers.
Plenty of proof verification tools out there but unfortunately not
something enough end-users care enough about to take advantage of
except those folks that depend on the accuracy of their proofs.
