A year and a half ago I got involved in a debate on this issue of
8-bit vs 16-bit data sent
to the print drivers. I was skeptical about the issue but proving or
even showing
evidence of this is difficult if not impossible. My gut feeling was
that since the printers
themselves (Epsons) were essentially just 2-bit at the dot level an
intermediate stage of
16-bit --> 8-bit --> 2-bit would not hurt versus 16-bit --> 2-bit
directly. So rather than
trying to show that 8-bit was enough by comparing to 16-bit I decided
to try to find
how many bits were NOT enough. I think the results are surprising.
Here are my tests and observations:

I've included the test files and test methods for anyone to try this themselves.
This isn't to say 16-bit is a bad idea or shouldn't be done but that
there are very
diminished returns. The best argument for 16-bit is to eliminate the
question of
"did you turn on the dither?" or "does you app dither appropriately?".
