Robert Krawitz sends:
I guess by "control slug" you mean "data sheet" or something like
that.
I think he wants something like they have on web presses--a
spectro head somewhere on the unit (on a web it lives between the
last printing unit and the finishing unit) and a set of color bars printed
in a non-image area of the print.
I KINDA like the idea. It makes sense that if you're going to
build a closed-loop color management system, you want to include
the output device in the loop. This does that.
My reticence comes from the fact most people run sheetfed inkjets.
I've got two Mutohs sitting on the shop floor right now, my first two
Vuteks in build in New Hampshire and a whole room full of roll vinyl.
If I give up a quarter-inch on the edge of a print to run a color bar, it's
not going to hurt me. Joe User runs 8-1/2 x 11, or maybe 11 x 17 if
he's feeling saucy today, and doesn't want to cut any of his print
off. He stands to gain the most from closed-loop CM, but he'll
never gain anything from it because he won't turn it on.
Now! What WOULD work is to have the system compare spectro
data from the print with color data from the file that was sent to the
printer.
