It's semi-subjective - I have been a color manager for over thirty years,
and I can see color really well - as measured by Munsell tests.
PhotoPrintPro is the high end of the SAI RIP series, that includes
profiling, just as Onyx Production house includes profiling. Both companies
tell me that using their integrated profiling package (RIP linearization,
gray balance, and ICC profiling) gives better results than using a 3rd party
package for ICC, such as ProfileMaker Pro. Initially I poo-pooed that as
hype, but after seeing the results, I believe it. The "ICC" profile that SAI
generates is different than a standard profile - it also includes
linearization and gray balance data for the RIP.
I have a color image that I use to evaluate I process I go through - you can
see it here: http://www.greengraphicsgroup.com/Color_Management.htm
I have used this chart to evaluate profiling on over 100 material types.
There are numerous items I look at in here - the gray balance in both the
stepped grayscale and the continuous one. I look for banding in the
continuous gray scale and the color scale. I look for skin tones in the four
different skin types. I look for subjective "snap" in the various images.
But largely, when I am comparing a banner material to a color separation
proof to a flatbed print on gatorfoam, I look for consistency between
images.
I find with the SAI profiling package that I get the best consistency
between materials, as compared to using the SAI or Onyx RIPS for
linearization and gray balance, and then switching to ProfilemakerPro for
generating an ICC profile that then has to be added to the RIP setup.
Of course, none of this is as good as an iterative linearization RIP, such a
the Dice RIP for the Lambda and Lightjet, but that RIP is no longer sold.

better than others? Objective and/or subjective?
