My understanding is Acrobat 8 also uses such a printing pipeline
although I haven't tested it, and haven't heard of similar problems.
Illustrator does not use this pipeline to my knowledge, but it does
have its own really obscure problem with respect to printing. It's
something like when the Document color space does not match the
corresponding Working Space, some conversion occurs at print time that
is not appropriate and is independent of the conversion specified in
the print dialog when selecting a profile (or explicitly asking for no
color management).
I have noticed that when AI builds files in say, US Sheetfed, Coated
CMYK
space, and printing to RGB (Epson) printers, it seems impossible to
get the
output to include white point simulation (i.e., AbsCol > RGB printer
profile
doesn't do it).
Illustrator is a problem child when it comes to color management.
Export a PDF and use Acrobat instead.
