That's a harsh comment. There is nothing wrong with using an instrument
"other" than a densitometer on press and it does not matter what the control
metric being used is as long as there is an industry consensus around its
usefulness and acceptability. ISO uses dot gain. Fine. But it could also
define TVI in terms of spectrophotometric reading as well. This is still
measuring reflectance. The number being used differs, that's all. But that
number is not less valuable nevertheless. Your comment make it sound that
way. Strictly speaking, densitometers don't measure ink film thickness. You
know that. They measure log reflectance. There is a linear relationship
between reflectance and ink film thickness, and that's why we use
reflectance to *indirectly* get an idea of IFT because it's very difficult
to measure IFT thickness in microns on a press as the job runs. Ever done
that yourself? I'd be interested to learn about your method -- seriously.
