If you think about it, it is counterintuitive to expect anything else. When
you shut down the OS writes all kinds of preferences to remember the state
the computer was shut down in. One of those prefs is what is the main
display. This is the only way it can work. There is no way for the computer
to know before startup that you have or have not got a external monitor
attached.
