If you think about it, it is counterintuitive to expect anything
else. When
you shut down the OS writes all kinds of preferences to remember the
state
the computer was shut down in. One of those prefs is what is the main
display. This is the only way it can work. There is no way for the
computer
to know before startup that you have or have not got a external
monitor
attached.
But at the end of the start-up process they system could notice of the
fact that an external monitor is attached (as it does with the
menubar) and make the external the default display (which does not
require a restart or logout). If I shut down my computer, remove the
external monitor and start it up again, the build-in monitor is made
the default. If I then attach the external monitor again (hot-
plugging) it automatically switches the default to the external one.
It could the same at the end of the start-up process if started up
with an external monitor attached.
