Mike,
For starters, it is known that the color matching function of the 1931
Standard Observer has some "error" in the blue region. From what I can
remember, the actual blue sensitivity is shifted towards shorter
wavelengths. Off the top of my head, that's the most obvious one.
Over the years, the scientific community has many times revisited those
cmf's.
It is known that cone fundamentals describe the system better than the
indirect method used in 1931 but because color scientists have been
reluctant to change, the observer has not evolved at all ever since.
But that may change soon...
