I agree that the sRGB-ProPhotoRGB-sRGB route is a chancy one, and fraught
with the potential perils that Martin is alluding to.

If sRGB is the end result anyway, then it's safer to keep and edit the image
in the original sRGB space -- though one still has to be cautious, even more
so in 8-bit environments.
