Graeme implemented popularity filtering in tiffgamut in the meanwhile and this is even better (much easier to "dose") than Gaussian Blur. Could you please explain this point? Did you perform any test with blurring?

Yes, with blurring, downsampling and some denoising filters. See the Argyll mailing list archive for details.
