Suppose I bring the calibrated luminance of an Apple Cinema Display down

knob on the side of the display. Would anyone know how to go about characterizing the ensuing “loss of levels” at
that calibrated luminance versus calibrating at the native luminance?

It depends of course, on whether the brightness knob is adjusting the back light, or whether it is manipulating lookup tables. If it's the former, then there should be no loss of levels.
