I don't want to start a RGB color space war, that would be sterile. But, in
your expert opinion, if I may ask, is the use of eciRGB v2 in the prepress,
studios and printing houses with which you are familiar with, wherever they
are located, very widespread?
I understand eciRGB v2 uses L* as opposed to the regular 2.2 gamma.
It is D50-based as opposed to D65.
And it has very wide primaries. Not as wide as ProPhoto but wider than sRGB,
which makes it a good candidate for wide-gamut LCD displays such as the new
HP or the higher end Eizos and the NEC LED LCD.
In my view, for users who choose to calibrate their monitors with tools
ColorEyes Display pro or basICColor Display (and Argyll too, I suppose),
which offer L* transfer function, it would seem that eciRGB v2 is a match
made in heaven?
The only drawback, of course, as far as I know, is that eciRGB v2 is still
not "bundled" with CS and is remains supported as an "output" color space in
CameraRAW. But I think it can be selected in Lightroom v2, even though
Lightroom's internal RGB space inextricably remains ProPhoto.
But apart from those "limitatins", I think it has some very appealing
features for photographers and prepress alike.
