If you absolutely MUST have a shootout (does anyone really have time
for this?), use a full ECI2002 or IT8.7/4 chart. The results can be
quite different numerically--one "problem" color on a control wedge
can skew the result misleadingly. The wedges were not designed for
characterization of a system, only for red-flagging problems during
production use and only after the RIP has been set up properly. That
being said, Thomas's numbers are just fine (assuming also a hue error
of below 1 on gray patches), and if his customers can maintain them
for months without more iteration or reprofiling they should be very
happy indeed. Profilemaker does a perfectly fine job and does not
"fall apart in the shadows," so my guess is that there is a more
fundamental problem there, possibly in your ink limiting in the RIP
or the way you're setting up PM.

1.57 average? You ought to get yourself a 9880 and a cheaper RIP ;-)
Let's have an Ugra/Fogra competition, I'll start:

My earlier problems with the darker patches looks to have been caused
by the paper profile.
The readings above use a paper profile built from the same data set
using ArgyllCMS. The original profile was made using Profilemaker. I
also built profiles using PrintOpen and Binuscan -- none of them would
work as well as the Argyll when using EFI's iterative calibration
routines with the Shoo-In tool. The PrintOpen and Profilemaker
profiles weren't good in the shadows and fell apart after 3
iterations. The Binuscan profile was OK in the shadows but gave me
really bad readings (8+ dE) in yellow primaries and pretty bad cyan
and magenta readings too.
I hadn't realised that there could be so much variation using the same
source data :-(
