In any case, I don't know which software, if any, use these patches
for flat-fielding.
From my measurements, I would say all software I tested (i1 Match,
ProfileMaker, MonacoProfiler, basICColor input, SilverFast IT8 Option)
does this, because in every case, the target lighting with only one
flash produced the better result, although the lighting was uneven
then. As soon as I used a Wolf Faust IT8 camera target instead, which
has a conventional IT8.7 layout and no white patches around the edges,
it's exactly the other way round. So I would assume all software makes
use of these white patches.
In any case, this does not seem relevant for our discussion at
hand, because the disputed fact is that I wrote I was able to
achieve better results with ICC profiles than Adobe etc.
Actually, I think it's completely relevant. My point is that if the
lighting is uneven, and perhaps inconsistently between the various
setups, then this could skew not only the profiles that are built,
but your results as well.
With "results" you mean my measurements results? My measurements were
performed completely independently from the target shootings for
building the profiles, and use a software I wrote myself to accomodate
for lighting differences. Just wait for the report.
You assume that all profiling software will react in a similar way
to the uneven lighting, but this is not a fair assumption. What if
one package compensates for the lighting but another does not.
Then one will provide better results than the other. Since for the
discussion at hand here, I will only use the best ICC profile I built,
anyway, and compare it to factory profiles I didn't build, I don't
think it really matters.
In any case, I feel this should be discussed once my report is online.
Otherwise I'll never find time to finish it. ;-)
