Eric,
I would agree with the fact that you're getting that feedback from all
photographers outside the catalog and repro world.
Accuracy is meaningless to most working photographers.
However that does not mean that methods to standardize color across
cameras and even across Raw processors shouldn't be found.
And the first step here is to find meaningful methods for measuring
color conformance in the real world.
The multi-billion movie industry will want standardized capture
technology, even if you don't. Movies are lensed by a variety of crews
with a variety of cameras in a variety of lights, and they need to
have a uniform look from start to finish. I expect the innnovation
will come from the movie industry, as it's clear that the still
picture industry is resisting measurement and standardisation of
capture color.

The feedback that we have gotten from most of our users (not color scientists, enthusiasts, etc.) is that they don't want accurate scene-referred color. Consequently, any description of accuracy (any metric you may come up with) doesn't fully cover the goals of our color profiles, because there is an aesthetic component to the project that is inherently subjective.
