Rik, thanks for taking the time, although unfortunately, I don't have
as much now, so let me concentrate on one IMHO crucial point:
Even if you do know the profile was scene-referred, it most likely
was not optimized to reproduce chart colors even if a chart was used
to help guide the profile building process. Most would prefer that a
scene-referred profile do a good job of reproducing scenes, not
charts.
This, of course, is the crucial point of each measurement: do the
values I measure represent what I'm actually interested in? In this
case, does a metrologically good result let me infer that the profile
will handle actual scenes more accurately?
To get some data on this, the test images I shot do not only contain
the test target. In each image, there's a person that holds the
target, and some surroundings; basically, the images are "real
snapshots". Applied to these images, I found a very high correlation
between the metrologically best profiles and the ones that produced
the most realistic (not necessarily most pleasing) image variants.
This, of course, was crucial in determining that I would go this route
for testing.
Bye
Uli
