Thank you for the detailed description on what is and has been expected in
terms of ICC profiles.
I have to say, I am all for ICC profiling , even with camera profiles. I am
not against using Adobe transformations from raw to whatever space either,
something I do use and rely on everyday.
As much as I¹d like to, I can¹t believe a simple chart lit with a known or
relatively stable light is going to reproduce the actual scene I want to
capture considering the way a captor sees the light so differently than the
human eye.
When the ICC can promote tags, tables , or whatever is needed to comprehend
the intricacies of scene referred camera encodings, then why not. Adobe have
always supported ICC, in some cases pioneering the ways for us to use ICC.
The decision to offer the best solution for most users cannot be discounted
for professionals and amateurs alike. No one has said that when the ICC has
what is needed that Adobe will not be there to fully support it's
application neither.
Adobe is currently making a huge effort to bring users to a higher level
with new output referred presets as well which pretty much match
manufacturer's presets, or exceed them.
Just as the OEM makes decisions on what they find to be the best pleasing
rendering, so does Adobe with the new DNG profiles.
As for metrology of the what would be inferred neutral state in relative
colorimetric it could be that there are ICC profiles that work a little
better for the colours in the SG chart. That is exactly where you might want
to use the ICC profiles for copy work, or other very fixed set ups with
classic digital capture.
Yet when it comes to real subjects shooting with the current DNG or CR
transformations , I cannot see why I'd want to try to adapt a profile to
these situations over just a camera calibration (according to Bruce Fraser
and Eric Chan's instructions) and process the raws through a linear TRC as
done in Lightroom.
Whenever I did testing with camera profiles, there were always hidden
surprises somewhere down the road with rendering typical varied light and
reflection scenes.
One thing though if you could, I'm a bit confused to how input profiles like
scanner profiles V2.1 and V4 fit into the output referred. IS this to do
with the profile being created with an output referenced medium?
