The question is: Is the Colorchecker or Colorcheker SG
representative of real-world colors ?
If not, then can a target that would be representative be
constructed ?
For, surely, the chief criterion in constructing a target should be
that capture quality of the target implies capture quality in the
real world.
Absolutely.
Of course, the question is if this is possible at all, considering all
the possible complications Eric mentioned. OTOH, I don't really see
how a profile designer that focuses on scenes rather than targets
could avoid all the metamerism etc. issues that target built profiles
might plague.
In any case, one enhancement of the current Digital ColorChecker SG
(relative to earlier targets) is that it features a lot of skin tone
color patches. And indeed, it's especially the skin tones that got
much better (= more realistic) with my ProfileMaker test profiles.
This would argue that it's possible to build a target that's relevant
for real-world colors.
