Dipping a toe back into these somewhat murky waters, this comment of
Uli's immediately made me think - what relevance does his preference
have to what anyone else might have visually preferred?
I know that there is such a thing as a 'Standard Observer', but our
measuring instruments vary quite widely from one instrument to
another and even more between models, and I get the impression that
human color vision varies far more. Doesn't that invalidate much of
this discussion? Or am I talking rubbish? Please enlighten me.
I would assume that cultural/"aesthetic" differences play a much
larger role than physiological ones in what somebody prefers.
Therefore, what I wrote was unfortunately quite imprecise (sorry, late
& no sleep), as it mixes up two things:
1. the aesthetic preference: the viewer might prefer a
(colorimetrically) faithful look, or the viewer might prefer a more
vivid, "prettified" look
2. the correlation between measurement results and actual visual
appearance of an image: *assumed* the viewer prefers the faithful
look, will measurement results be able to mirror his preferences for
specific profiles?
What I meant to point out with the above quote was only that 2) was
actually the case; of course, my own aesthetic preferences don't
matter in this discussion.
Bye
Uli
