I've been trying out the demo of the most recent version of Silverfast
AI Studio (6.6r2) with a Nikon V film scanner. It seems to offer no
control over exposure. Have I missed something? I've looked through
the Options menu and examined all the little buttons on the left side
of the window. Is it applying auto exposure to each new scan, or does
it always set a single exposure? If the former, I don't see how it's
possible to profile with any degree of certainty.
I couldn't use Auto IT8 with the demo (aside from that one feature,
the demo is supposedly fully fuctional), but if exposure control isn't
exposed anywhere in the program, it makes me wonder how Auto IT8 deals
with it, at least for Nikon scanners.
Eldon,
you are right, you are now missing the exposure button in SilverFast
6.6.0r2. This was removed during the switch from Nikon's own
NikonMaid drivers to a genuine SilverFast driver. As you may know
the NikonMaid drivers are not fully compatible under Leopard -->
official announcement - which is why SilverFast came up with our own
drivers and introduced a different "exposure approach".
It doesn't apply auto exposure to each new scan. As long as no
adjustments are applied to the scan, a default exposure will be
applied. If tonal range adjustments are applied via setting Dmin
(whitepoint) in the histogram ,the exposure levels will be
"controlled" accordingly. In simple words, there is no extra exposure
control dialogue anymore, yet the exposure control is now synced
analogue to the adjustments in the histogram dialogue. So when an
image is "brightened up" via setting Dmin (whitepoint) in the
histogram, SilverFast will automatically increase the exposure level
in the scanner. One advantage of this workflow is that abberations
like noise will not be increased when brightening up an image. How
does this affect the (Auto)IT8-calibration in SilverFast? It really
doesn't!
Your scanner profile is still "safe" because since SilverFast is not
a "icc-profiler-only" software it does have some advantages when it
comes to profiling a scanner. One of them is that it takes the
reference values of the chart literally, meaning there will be no
gamut expansion / image optimisation applied during the calibration/
profiling process. The calibration process is performed based on the
standard exposure. You will still be safe with your SilverFast
scanner profile even when changing the exposure of the scanner
because brightening up an image will generally not change the color hue.
I hope my explanation is helpful.
Best,
JAN
