Michael,
I've produced a large number of very high quality colour negative scans using the combination of a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 and Silverfast Studio Ai 6.x with Negafix. The detail, colour and tonal quality this process, properly handled, can yield is truly remarkable at least to A3 size from a 35mm negative - as attested by my peer reviewers - not only my observation. Colour negative materials generally have greater exposure latitude than transparencies and processed properly the colour tends to be more natural, but this latter point is subjective. Doing this work is time consuming, but apart from that there is absolutely no case for avoiding it - especially when most of one's legacy work from the film era consists of colour negs!

Mark, I used to work for a scanner manufacturer and directly with hardware/software Engineering. Scanning a negative is not ideal. There are so few CCD's with the sensitivity to pick up all of the data hiding in the negative and fewer still being used in a scanner. There are legions of other issues that Silverfast has sort of solved, Using negatives is really more for corner-cases and should be avoided. A good generalization is the best scans come from medium format or larger transparencies.
